It is the administrative headquarters of the Ayodhya district and division in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya, alternatively referred to as Saket, is a historic city in India. It is the birthplace of Bhagwan Shri Ram and the backdrop for the great epic Ramayana. Ayodhya was the historical capital of the Kosala Kingdom. It is 93 meters above sea level on average (305 feet).
Ayodhya (Awadhpuri) has been recognized as the first of the seven most important pilgrimage sites (Mokshdayini Sapt Puris) for Hindus due to the belief that it is the birthplace of Bhagwan Shri Ram.

The government has changed the name of Ayodhya Airport to Maryada Purushottam Shriram International Airport after Lord Shri Ram in 2021.
